4 Causes of Teeth Discoloration

A set of bright white teeth is a vital feature affecting someone’s character and personality, apart from how he is perceived. Teeth do have an impact on someone’s overall impression. For instance, you do not get ashamed of smiling and laughing because a complete set of white teeth also gives you confidence. Moreover, this confidence brings positive results to work and social life.

Everyone wants a complete set of bright white teeth. Some undergo teeth whitening procedures with their chosen dentists in Manila. Some go for over-the-counter teeth whitening products.

But to address the problem with stained teeth, we should first determine what causes discoloration.

The color of the dentin

Enamel is the translucent outermost covering of the teeth. Next to it is the dentin which is responsible for the tooth color. Dentin could be white, off-white, gray or yellowish. You should be grateful if your dentin is naturally white in color, but if it isn’t, you could at least take care of the shape of your teeth. Avoid those habits that affect your oral condition.

What you drink does a lot

Although dentin is primarily responsible for the color of your teeth, your lifestyle is also a contributor. How often do you drink coffee? Tooth enamel might be seen as flat and smooth, but it is not. It has microscopic ridges that can hold food particles, thus, dark particles from your coffee can be transferred onto your enamel. By the way, it is not only about your coffee. This includes other tooth-staining beverages like tea and energy drinks.

Since totally stopping the consumption of these drinks is really hard, you can at least try to drink coffee, for instance, on a specific time. On the other hand, if you’re into drinking colored juices, you can use a straw to minimize direct contact of the beverage to the teeth. After drinking, brush your teeth or rinse with water. For better teeth whitening maintenance, make an appointment with your dentist in Manila.

Poor dental hygiene

Definitely, your dental hygiene is reflected on how your teeth look. If you do not brush your teeth after eating, food particles are not removed and plaques may develop. Poor dental hygiene, in addition, results of tooth decay. When your tooth decays, it changes in color. However, to treat the discoloration caused by tooth decay, you should first address the main problem.

Smoking

Aside from the harmful effects of cigarette smoking to the body, it leaves unwanted stains on your teeth. Tooth discoloration caused by smoking is caused by its two main ingredients: nicotine and tar. Nicotine is a colorless substance, however; it becomes yellowish in color when combined with oxygen. In contrast, tar is naturally dark in color. And like how coffee and dark colored beverages discolor your teeth, microscopic particles are left in the enamel of your tooth.

Teeth whitening, like any other dental procedures, should be done under the supervision of your dentist. There may be over-the-counter products you can buy from drugstores in Manila but since teeth discoloration is caused by different reasons, it should be treated with specificity and care.

Interesting causes of teeth discoloration they said to brush immediately after eating, but it's recommended not to brush immediately after eating or drinking high acid foods/drinks.
